Enjoying Food is a Form of Self-Love…

Updated: Nov 4, 2024

As a dietitian who’s been on my own journey with balanced eating—and after helping many clients reach their goals—I’ve learned one key thing: enjoying your food is essential. We’ve all had those moments where we eat a meal just because it’s ‘healthy’ or ‘balanced,’ but it’s so bland that we feel like something’s missing. And that’s exactly why it’s not sustainable.

If you don’t enjoy what you’re eating, it becomes a chore, and healthy habits aren’t meant to feel like punishment. Food is more than just fuel for your body—it’s comfort, culture, and connection.

I talk a lot about the satisfaction factor with my clients. This simply means enjoying what’s on your plate. Because when you enjoy your food, it’s easier to keep up with healthy habits. You don’t feel deprived or like you’re missing out. You look forward to your meals, and that’s what makes healthy eating sustainable.

Here’s a super easy tip to get more enjoyment from your meals: make small tweaks to add flavor and texture without losing the nutritional benefits. Let’s say you’re having dinner. Instead of just plain chicken rice veg why not turn it into something flavorful that you genuinely look forward to? For example, you could make a spicy curry. You can season the chicken with spices you love—like turmeric, cumin, and chili powder—and cook it in a rich, tomato-based sauce. Add some garlic, ginger, and a splash of coconut milk for creaminess. Serve it over brown rice and toss in some roasted veggies for texture and color.

At the end of the day, enjoying what you eat is a form of self-care, and it’s the key to sticking with healthier habits in the long run. When you find joy in your meals, you’re more likely to stay consistent, which makes reaching your goals a whole lot easier—and a lot more enjoyable. 🫶🏻 #satisfaction #dietitian
